Star Trek has always been lame and the new Star Trek movie is no exception. This appears to be the latest attempt of Parramount to revide the sickly and dying francise. TOTAL CRAP!!!!!
"My enemies...I am Exar Kun."
-Exar Kun
Exar Kun was a highly talented Jedi apprentice under the tutelage of Master Vodo-Siosk Baas. After being forced to fall to the dark side of the Force by ancient Sith spirits, he became one of the galaxy's most powerful and dangerous Sith Lords, taking Ulic Qel-Droma as his apprentice. He then initiated the Great Sith War, tearing the Galactic Republic apart through several battles, until he sealed his own spirit away in a Massassi Temple on Yavin 4.
Thousands of years later Kun's spirit would return to wreak havoc on Luke Skywalker's Jedi Praxeum. He possessed two students, Gantoris and Kyp Durron, turning them to the dark side and eventually killing Gantoris. He also succeeded in taking Luke's soul from his body, but was eventually defeated by the combined power of Luke's students.
Orilltha was a Sith Lord in the Brotherhood of Darkness who served as an instructor at the Sith Academy on Korriban. Orilltha was eventually called away to Ruusan to combat the Army of Light, where the Sith Lord's life would come to an end.
"I do not waste my teachings on the weak."
-Adas
Adas was King of Korriban and the Sith in a reign that lasted nearly three hundred years. He was large for his species, his skin was unusually charcoal-colored, and he was raised as a chosen being from his youth. Encasing himself in ebon armor, he wielded a massive battle-ax, and became a master of Sith magic. Circa 28,000 BBY, Adas united the disparate nations of Korriban in a series of bloody conflicts, eventually solidifying himself as the sole leader of his people.
The Sith hailed Adas as the Sith'ari, or "Overlord." The commonly held belief was that he was invincible, and that his reign would be eternal. Circa 27,700 BBY, Rakatans from the Infinite Empire arrived on Korriban, and taught Adas how to harness the technology of holocrons. Adas created one of these devices, but soon realized that the new arrivals were attempting to conquer Korriban. He took his battle-ax to the aliens, and with his people at his side, drove them off. In doing so, he lost his life.
Adas's influence, however, would continue for many years following his death. His holocron, lost on Ashas Ree during the Great Hyperspace War, would later be found by fallen Jedi Knight Freedon Nadd, who used Adas's teachings to subjugate and rule Onderon. When that planet cast off the yoke of Sith oppression in 4,000 BBY, the Jedi attempted to hide the holocron, so that it would not fall into the wrong hands. For nearly four thousand years it remained safely hidden on Kodai, but was retrieved in the years prior to the Clone Wars. Murder was committed several times in attempts to gain control of the holocron, and it was eventually returned to Korriban while in the possession of Dark Lady of the Sith Lumiya.
"The Sith must be ruled by a single leader, the very embodiment of the strength and power of the dark side. If the leader grows weak another must rise to seize the mantle."
-Darth Revan's holocron
The title of Dark Lord of the Sith, or Jen'ari in the Sith language, originally referred to the ruler of the Sith Empire, and later was taken by the recognized leader of the Order of the Sith Lords. Before Kaan, there was only one Dark Lord of the Sith at a time, who was the head of the Order-in more recent periods, it was a title shared by multiple individuals simultaneously. The term referred to individuals of both sexes, though Lumiya claimed the title of Dark Lady of the Sith.
The title Dark Lord of the Sith is often thought to be synonymous with the title Darth. Contrary to this, however, is the fact that Sith apprentices have been known to carry the title as well. Two examples would be Darth Malak as Darth Revan's apprentice, and Darth Bandon as Malak's. Many Sith Lords have used the Darth title, but there is no evidence as to the synonymic relationship of these two appellations.
The title of Dark Lord was possibly comparable to that of a Jedi Grand Master.
"A thousand Jedi died cursing Darth Desolous. Now, you too shall scream my name!"
-Darth Desolous
Darth Desolous was a male Pau'an Dark Lord of the Sith. Before falling to the dark side of the Force, he was a revered Jedi Master whose name had long been forgotten.
"He is a wound in the Force, more presence than flesh, and in his wake life dies... sacrificing itself to his hunger."
-Visas Marr -
Darth Nihilus was a Force-sensitive Human male who lived during the Dark Wars. He lost everything during the Mandalorian Wars, surviving the activation of the Mass Shadow Generator at the Battle of Malachor V. The experience of the mass shadows made him "hunger" for Force energy, and the affliction began to ravage his body. In his pain he became a wound in the Force and was found by a seeker of such things, Darth Traya, who told him that she could teach him to feed his hunger. He accepted her offer and came under her apprenticeship at her Dark Jedi academy, choosing to wield the dark side of the Force as his weapon, and over time became one of three concurrent Dark Lords of the Sith.
Together, the three formed a triumvirate with Traya at its head and her other apprentice, Darth Sion, as the third. The trio chose individual names for themselves, and Nihilus became the Lord of Hunger. The apprentices grew in strength during their training and eventually overpowered their Master. Sion beat Traya, with Nihilus right behind him, before they exiled her and the two combined their powers to sever her ties to the Force. Nihilus's affliction developed to the point where he was forced to call upon his dark powers and encase his spirit within his mask and armor to stay alive. Nihilus and Sion then became the main perpetrators of the First Jedi Purge, causing the virtual extinction of the Jedi Order.
Darth Nihilus was responsible for the Devastation of Katarr, killing and absorbing the Force energy of the Jedi at the Conclave on Katarr, along with every other living thing on the planet, save one Miraluka woman named Visas Marr. Having survived, Marr was taken by Nihilus, and became his apprentice. About one year later, the duo felt a growing presence in the Force and he sent his apprentice to investigate. The presence was a woman, known only as the Exile, who was on a quest to find the remaining Jedi Masters who had survived the Purge.
The Exile defeated and spared Visas Marr, convincing her to turn to the light side of the Force in the process. Although Nihilus returned to lurking the fringes of known space, he eventually fell in the Battle of Telos IV at the hands of Marr, the Jedi Exile, and Mandalore the Preserver in 3,951 BBY.
"I am the Dark Lord who will restore the Sith to glory. They call me Bane."
-Darth Bane
Darth Bane, born under the name of Dessel, was one of the most pivotal Dark Lords of the Sith. Born in 1,026 BBY, he was raised as a poor miner on the Outer Rim planet Apatros. After killing a Galactic Republic ensign in a fight, he was in danger of being arrested by the Republic. With the help of his friend Groshik, Dessel escaped off-world to join the Brotherhood of Darkness. Initially serving as a foot soldier in the Gloom Walkers, Bane was recognized as a Force-sensitive, and taken to the Sith Academy on Korriban.
He studied there for a time, quickly becoming one of the best students before he lost his faith in the dark side of the Force. Bane, as he was now known, was able to regain his faith and determination to become the best. However, he would soon lose confidence in the Brotherhood of Darkness and its leader, Kaan. Bane believed Kaan to be a coward and a fool. Deserting the order for a time, he studied the holocron of Darth Revan, and, armed with new knowledge, helped destroy the Brotherhood, allowing him to create his own Sith Order. Bane then instituted a Rule of Two, which stated that there could be only two Sith to avoid the infighting that had plagued the Sith for millennia.
Bane took as his apprentice a Human female he christened Darth Zannah. Zannah would help him secretly build up the Sith's resources, waiting for a time when the Sith could strike. Almost one thousand years later, Darth Sidious would finally triumph over the Jedi and engineer the collapse of the Galactic Republic. By 130 ABY, the Rule of Two had been abolished and replaced with the Rule of One.
The Sith are a group of Force users in the Star Wars universe. They are the central antagonists of the franchise. Characterized by their single-minded lust for power and disdain for sentient life, they are an alliance of warrior priests who use the dark side of the Force and serve as counterparts to the Jedi Knights.
The Sith are portrayed in various Star Wars media as individuals who use the dark side to attain power at any cost. The Star Wars prequel films establish that they draw upon strong emotions, both negative and positive, as the source of their power, and care only about themselves. This is in contrast to the Jedi, who are portrayed as forsaking emotional attachment in order to serve others and the galaxy as a whole.
In their later history, members of the Order receive the ceremonial title of "Darth" (in my case Dath) to signify their membership into the Order.
Many people mistakenly use the terms Dark Jedi and Sith synonymously. Many people simply assumed that they were one and the same. For example, in the two Dark Empire series written by Tom Veitch, the Emperor has a number of force-wielding disciples who are referred to as "Dark Jedi." But it seems pretty obvious that can also be considered Sith.
However, in the recent Jedi: Mace Windu special, we are introduced to Ventress. Windu comments to her "There is darkness in you, but you are not Sith." So this would seem to imply that a Dark Jedi is not automatically a Sith.
So, what's the difference? Is a dark Jedi simply any Jedi that has gone to the Dark Side, while a Sith is a Dark Jedi who has adopted a specific philosophical or political outlook? In which case what are the Siths' motivations anyway, besides seizing power? Saying that they are power hungry, or simply evil for the sake of being evil, seems a bit simplistic. Most evil movements are motivated my some sort of ideology or justification.
Darth Vader is obviously a fascist, seeking to bring absolute order and control to the galaxy. But what motivates Palpatine, Dooku, et al?
